In February 1806, Shem and his brothers Japheth and Noah Tyson, Jr. sold 140 acres on the south side of the Tar River to Benjamin Sutton, containing the plantation and mill whereon their dead father Noah Tyson had lived. The land was given to John Tyson, their brother who died and his share was divided equally among all the brothers and sisters.

The land around the mill appears to have been exempt form above deed since Shem and his other brothers bought several rights of their sister-in-law, Elizabeth Tyson inheritance. On February 11, 1807, Shem purchased from Elizabeth Tyson, James Tyson's widow, her 11/16th ownership share in Noah Tyson's water saw and gristmill. In 1809 Shem purchased his brother, Noah Tyson, Jr's. share of the mill.

On November 20, 1811 Shem Tyson sold Robert Forbes 250 acres on both sides of Hardees Run for $350.00, the land including the water gristmill and except an acre for the graveyard and a road to it. By 1815, Shem Tyson was guardian of Jesse Tyson, Robert Forbes, Silas Tyson and Moses Tyson, in which capacity he sold 75 acres on Hardees Run to David Sutton on December 23, 1815.

Shem Tyson died October 23, 1825. It is known from the deeds he left a Will (whereabouts unknown) naming Silas Tyson and Macon Moye as executors. On December 27, 1825 the above executors sold to William Nobles 108 3/4 acres for $840.00. The land was on Hardees Run, bounded by Robert Forbes and John Anderson. Shem Tyson married first to Lucretia Adams. He married second about 1821 to Susannye, daughter of William and Susannah Moye of Pitt County.

Shem Tyson's sons: Archibald and John married sisters, Sarah Jane Warren and Martha Matilda Warren. Archibald Tyson was born in Pitt County North Carolina, September 5, 1805. On August 5, 1825 Archibald bought 80 acres of land on the north side of the 'Hardees Run', Pitt County from John Speirs and his wife Elizabeth, the widow of James Tyson.

In August, 1828, Archibald turned around and sold back the same land to John Spiers. Sometime after this date Archibald and his brother, John, moved from Pitt County to Lowndes County, Alabama. According to family tradition they journeyed for 5 weeks with 12 Negroes and 10 mules to get to Alabama. On June 8, 1843, Archibald was marred by Rev. William Rice near Prairie Hill, Lowndes County, Alabama to Sarah Jane Warren, the daughter of Laban and Parthia (Jones) Warren, of Fort Dale, Alabama.

Between 1850 and 1858, Archibald and his wife built the lovely antebellum home which still stands today known as "The Pillars". Archibald was remembered as a successful farmer of practical means and he would not allow his overseers to whip his slaves. When the Civil War ended he had on had 500 slaves, who were set free by the result of the war. He luckily had 500 bales of cotton which brought anywhere from $0.75 to $1.00 per pound and $10,000 in gold he had saved.
