Mathias Tyson (1660-1710)
Mathias Tyson (1660-1710)
7th Great Grandfather
Mathias Tyson the only son and eldest of three born to John and Susannika was born in Northampton County, Virginia, around 1660. He died in 1710 in Pitt County, North Carolina. He married Mary Frances Potts. She was born in 1661 in Montgomeryshire, Wales. She died on 07 Feb 1738 in Beaufort, North Carolina. Mathias was my 7th great grandfather.
Mathias’ occupation was that of a 'Cooper'. A Cooper is a person who makes or repairs wooden barrels or casks.
We know a great deal about Mathias including that in 1693 or 1694 he purchased approximately 300 acres of land on or near Messongo Creek in Accomack County, Virginia south of where he as born. Mathias purchased the land with 7,000 lbs. of tobacco. The land was purchased from Catherine Bowman, widow of Edmund Bowman.
The equivalent of Mathias' land purchase in 1690 would have been $419 U.S. dollars today. Mathias owned the Accomack County property for less than an decade, after which it was sold by Tully Robinson who Mathias had made power of attorney. Robinson sold the land to Robert Hamilton who was Mathias' stepfather in 1702/03. The purchase price was 4000 lbs. of tobacco (just over 1/2 of what the original purchase price was).
The drop in tobacco prices during the sale of the Mathias' Accomack County land coincides with the outbreak of Queen Anne's War (1702–1713), prices fell to one-quarter of a penny per pound. These factors, however, failed to convince planters to cut production, and in 1709 an all-time high of 29 million pounds of tobacco was produced. The plant continued to fetch a low price until the inspection act was passed in 1730. A year later the price of tobacco increased to twelve shillings and six pence per hundredweight, even though production rose to 34 million pounds.
Mathias may or may not have been in Virginia when his 300 acres was sold to his stepfather. We do know that North Carolina records show him in the Bath County area in the early 1700’s.
Mathias moved southernly once again around 1708. In that year a number of people living in Wickham, Bath County, North Carolina petitioned a court to be established in their vicinity. Among those petitioners were Mathias and his son John Tyson (1690). Mathias’ application for a land patent to the "Duke of Beaufort, Palatine" was not approved until 1713, three years after Mathias’ death 1710.
In Bath County, North Carolina, Mathias and his family made their home on Slade Creek off the Matchepungo (Pungo) River. Mathias's son Edward would remain in the area and leave descendants there.
